What Is Verified Primary Research? A Definition and a Standard

Verified primary research is evidence from identified human sources whose identity and role have been confirmed, with a record the client can inspect.

Black and white geometric architecture, What Is Verified Primary Research? A Definition and a Standard

Verified primary research is evidence gathered directly from human sources whose identity and role have been confirmed before the conversation, whose contribution is recorded and logged, and whose provenance is delivered to the client alongside the findings. It differs from ordinary primary research in that the client can inspect the chain of evidence rather than trust the supplier's word.

The definition

Primary research is evidence collected directly, through interviews, observation or surveys, rather than taken from existing documents. It has always been the most expensive and most valuable form of evidence, because it can answer questions nobody has written about yet.

Verified primary research adds a standard of proof. Before the conversation, the researcher confirms who the source is and what role they hold, through professional records, employer confirmation, or a combination. During the conversation, a record is made and stored. After the conversation, the client receives a provenance appendix that lists each source, how they were verified, when they were interviewed and where the record is held. Names are disclosed where consent permits; where it does not, role, organisation type and verification status are given.

Why the distinction matters now

Two years ago, "we interviewed thirty executives" was a claim a client could reasonably take on trust. Two things have changed. The largest consulting firms have published reports containing citations that did not exist, produced by AI tools and unchecked by humans. And the online panels that most quantitative research runs on are now estimated to be 30 to 40 percent compromised. In that environment, the claim needs proof. Verification is the proof.

What verification is not

It is not a bigger sample. Thirty verified conversations with the right people are worth more than three thousand unverified survey completes. It is not an anti-technology position. Theory uses AI to schedule, transcribe and code every study; the technology does the logistics and a person does the evidence. And it is not a guarantee that sources are right. Experts disagree and are sometimes wrong. Verification guarantees that the source is who we say they are and said what we report. Judgment about what it means is a separate, human act, which is why every Theory recommendation is signed.

The standard, in five lines

  1. Every source is identity- and role-confirmed before the interview.
  2. Every conversation is recorded or contemporaneously documented and stored.
  3. Every factual claim in the deliverable traces to a logged source.
  4. Every deliverable carries a provenance appendix.
  5. A named person signs the conclusion and is available to defend it.

This is The Theory Standard. Any research supplier can adopt it. Ask yours whether they will.

Questions this article answers

What is the difference between primary and verified primary research?

Primary research is evidence gathered directly from people. Verified primary research adds identity and role confirmation before the interview, a logged record, and a provenance appendix the client can inspect.

How many interviews does verified primary research need?

It depends on the decision. A Theory Signal Brief uses 6 to 8 verified interviews for one sharp question; a Decision Study uses 15 to 30 for a consequential decision with several stakeholder groups.
