Theory Intelligence provides law firms, accounting firms, consultancies and other professional services partnerships with verified primary research for client listening, lateral and practice investment, pitch debriefs and new market decisions: interviews with general counsel, CFOs and buyers of advice whose roles have been checked, with a signed recommendation.
- Client listening Signal Brief: 6 to 8 verified general counsel, CFOs or procurement leads in 10 business days, USD 7,500 to 12,000
- Practice or office launch Decision Study: 15 to 30 verified buyers and competitors' clients, 4 to 6 weeks, USD 25,000 to 75,000
- Independent pitch and panel debriefs that clients will give a third party and not a partner
- Research on how buyers of advice regard AI use by their advisers
- Standing client and market sentiment through the Intelligence Retainer
Firms that advise for a living rarely research their own market
Partnerships sell judgment, and they usually make their own biggest decisions on partner instinct: which practice to build, which lateral to hire, which city to open in, why the panel appointment went to a competitor. Client feedback programmes exist, but they are run by the relationship partner, and clients tell relationship partners what is comfortable. The honest answer goes to a third party or nowhere.
The question has become more urgent because clients are now asking their advisers a pointed question of their own: how much of this work was done by AI, and what am I paying for. In 2026 Source Global Research found that 70 percent of buyers would not trust a report prepared with AI. A firm that does not know how its clients feel about that is pricing blind.
What we do for professional firms
Client listening
A Signal Brief with six to eight verified general counsel, CFOs or heads of procurement, interviewed by a Theory researcher with no relationship to protect. Verbatim quotations, a signed read on what clients value, resent and would pay more for.
Pitch and panel debriefs
After a significant win or loss, an independent debrief with the buyer. Clients say things to us about pricing, team and chemistry that they will not say to a partner. Delivered as a short signed note within two weeks.
Practice, lateral and office investment
A Decision Study before a new practice, a lateral group hire or a new office: fifteen to thirty verified interviews with buyers in the target market, competitors' clients and where relevant the candidates' former clients. Demand, pricing and reputation tested against evidence rather than a partner's network.
Standing market intelligence
An Intelligence Retainer for a managing partner or practice head: a monthly verified read on client sentiment, competitor moves and buyer attitudes to fees and technology.
Discretion
Participants are senior and the market is small. We present participants by role and organisation type unless they consent to be named, we agree the recruitment approach with you before any outreach, and the provenance appendix shows verification without exposing identities.
All work is delivered under The Theory Standard. See services and prices.
Questions from professional services clients
Will clients actually talk to a third party?
Usually more readily than to the firm itself, provided the researcher is credible and the purpose is clear. We agree the introduction approach with you and report the response rate.
Can you research a lateral candidate's client following?
Within legal and ethical limits, yes: we interview verified former clients and market participants about the candidate's reputation and portability. We do not contact the candidate's current clients without agreement.
Do you work for law firms in the same market as each other?
We disclose conflicts at scoping and will decline work where a live engagement makes independence impossible.
